Having spent the last few days on the ‘run’ trying to see
every Gaudi exhibit and every museum Barcelona has to offer we decided today
was going to be a beach day. No showers,
no make-up just bathing suits and shoes, we walked our way to the beach. Sue was itching to try a lemonade beer and I
knew where she could find one.
But before we did that the ’36 hours in Barcelona’ article
was suggesting a bakery located at the beach in Barcelonetta. With my trusty map in hand we set about
finding Buluard Street and the Buluard Bakery.
We reached the bakery around 11am, late for a bakery but it was still a
madhouse. Pushing and shoving our way to
the front of the line we were finally able to order a couple of pastries. The
bakery didn’t serve coffee so we found a place down the street to order coffee
and enjoy the pastries. Sue says she
loved hers, not so much me but then I’m not a pastry fan to start so I may be
being a little harsh here.
Next stop the Barcelona beach……..which was not really
crowded and very pleasant. We found
ourselves a couple of beach chairs and settled in for a couple of hours. When the tall cabana boy came by we ordered a
couple of lemonade beers……now the day was looking up. Sue who is not really a beer person declared
the lemonade beer the ‘best beer she had ever had’. And I counted another convert among my
lemonade beer drinkers. All of a sudden
here came the rain, a sprinkle at first and maybe never much more than that but
it was enough to run us off the beach.
A few nights ago Sue was talking with a woman who said she
was drinking ‘red champagne’ and ever since then she has been asking everyone
she can how she might put her hands on some of this red champagne. Since we were still a little early for dinner
Sue spotted a bar that she thought might be a good lead for this stuff. In we went.
The bartender did know of this magic concoction called ‘red champagne’
and he even had some however, he could only sell it by the bottle. No cigar but we’re making progress. I think we might be headed back here one
night soon so we can try the red champagne magic!!
But now it was into Milk.
This restaurant with its intriguing name gets terrific reviews. It turned out to be an absolutely charming small
restaurant with an adorable bartender and somewhat non-Spanish food. The change of pace was well received by both
of us as we shared some humus and a chicken pasta with red pepper sauce. The chef was from San Francisco…………I liked
that. Most of our dinners have been in
busy restaurants where intended or not things are somewhat rushed. Here we able to relax and enjoy a leisurely meal
and a bottle of plain out normal champagne……..how blasé.
We called it an early night………all that sun and sand wears
girls out.
