After a full day of boating and beaching we were ready for a
night out but we already knew from the previous night’s search there simply
wasn’t much to be had in Tossa de Mar.
We didn’t know how we were going to do it but we were determined to make
a night of it in Costa Bravo. We both
took those long showers where you shave everything, lotion your entire body and
actually leave the conditioner in your hair for 2-3 minutes like the bottle
tells you to!! When we were done we went
through every item of clothing we had with us until we both had selected the
best party clothes in our backpacks.
At the front desk we asked about possible restaurants and I
asked my favorite question, ‘If it was a special night and you wanted a really
good dinner and some fun, where would you go?’
Without hesitation the very pretty 20 something behind the desk said,
‘The Castle Restaurant but it is expensive’.
Tonight we were willing to pay the price for some action so off to the
Castle Restaurant we went.
It was a pretty good hike straight uphill but with only one
stop along the way for cava to keep us going we finally reached our goal………a
darling young man greeted us and assured us we had found the right
restaurant. It really wasn’t the food we
were looking for but the fun so we each just ordered a salad. I choose one with octopus because after all
we were dining in a castle on the Mediterranean!! Joan is gorgeous and had been hit on all
day……..including one of the guys on our boat ride, a soon to be groom who was dressed as a baby
in a diaper at his bachelor party who was willing to forgo his wedding for one
date with her and the guys who kept staring at her when we stopped for cava. But the dinner was all mine. After lots of eye contact with one of those very
handsome, middle age guys with lots of dark hard and just a bit of greying at
the temples, who looked to be the manager, a few smiles back and forth, he sent
us over a complimentary dessert and after dinner drink. While thanking him we asked if he knew of
anywhere we might find a little music.
Yes, he did and in fact he would be going there himself after he finished
work……and would love to buy us a drink when he arrived.
He quickly grabbed a drink napkin and started to sketch out
how we were to find this magic place. In
towns like this they never use street names simply ‘rights and lefts’ and then
a big X with a circle around it where the place is supposed to be. Knowing we were going to need a little help
from one kind of god or another to find this place we set out
opportunistically. There were a few
wrong turns and a couple of pretty dark corners we didn’t care much for but the
miracle happened and we found our bar.
As we walked in Mario greeted us with a huge smile and said,
‘It’s the American women, Carlos called and he is buying your first drink, what
would you ladies like?’ Mario was a
bundle of fun all wrapped up in a short guy who looked exactly like ‘Super
Mario’………this can’t be his real name but he insisted it was. And yes he was from Italy so he and Joan hit
it off immediately as the Italians always do when they find each other. Mario asked us who are favorite musical
artists were and in no time at all we were listening to the Stones………..Joan’s
favorite and Maroon 5, mine.
We had not only found our bar but also our bartender. When we finally convinced Mario it was time
for us to leave and somehow stopped the steady flow of drinks that had
continued to come our way all night he insisted he had to play one more song
for us. Soon blasting throughout the
entire bar was the Stones, ‘Oh, What a Night’……….we started singing along and
in no time we had the whole bar singing with us.
We’ve tried and tried to determine exactly what time it was
when we returned to the hotel and for the life of us we can’t seem to come up
with it but one thing we definitely had no trouble agreeing to was that Tossa de
Mar can be a lot of fun……..oh, what a night, indeed!!
