Placa de Catalunya and the Night Clubs

Today I set out to ride the Metro to Placa de Catalunya but once again as soon as I got outside with the beautiful clear blue sky and the temperature right around 85 degrees I just couldn’t make myself go underground to the Metro so I decided to walk instead.  I haven’t made it onto the Metro yet even though I’ve intended to several times, it’s just too easy to walk.  I have great memories of Palca de Catalunya form my one and only previous trip here in 1994.  That was the year of my first retirement from Pacific Bell and I treated myself to an extended vacation throughout Europe.  Spain wasn’t actually on the agenda for that trip but we were in France and still had one more round trip train ride left on our Euro Pass so we hopped down to Spain!!  I was awed then and I’m awed now.  However, I think Barcelona has changed a lot since that first visit or maybe it is me who has done the changing……..not sure.

The Plaza was easy to find and as beautiful as I remember but not nearly as big.  It’s funny how that works!  I was a bit surprised to find that someone had been so concerned about one of the statues exposing her breast that they had sacrificed their tee shirt to cover her.  She’s a good sized girl so I was kind of baffled about how they actually got it on her but somehow they surely did.

There is also now a lot of night clubs in the area surrounding the plaza.  I don’t remember these either but the truth is I’m probably more likely to go clubbing now than I was then!!  I was fascinated by many of the signs outside of these night clubs advertising their various forms of entertainment.  I especially noticed the one above.  None of these acts are known to me but I’m thinking Monday and Wednesday are looking the most interesting, what do you think?

Part of my purpose for wanting to go this area of town today was to try and find some department stores and I had read that this was where they were located.  I was still looking for a few things I needed for the apartment.  I found a couple of home stores and did find a few of the items I needed so that was nice.  But wow, things are really expensive here!!  One pillow case for a twin bed was $15 Euro and pillows were $49 Euro for two.  I usually get mine at Marshall’s for $9.99 and they’re the top of the line pillows!! No wonder these guys are always protesting!

So you American’s are probably not paying much attention to the European Soccer Championships that are being played here but last night’s game was very exciting.  Yes I did use soccer and exciting in the same sentence!  Spain and Italy will play for the championship on Sunday night and I expect the top to come off of this place for that game.  If you get a chance give it a look.  Italy has this incredible scoring machine by the name of Mario Balotelli.  He has this amazing body which I have a hard time not staring at but at the same time I also think he might be possessed.  Maybe the Fifty Shades of Gray books are getting to me after all!!
